CODE 2, VOL 34, NO 7 : 16 march 2020

Leave arrangements relating to COVID-19

Many of you have asked questions relating to leave arrangements should you contract COVID-19 or be required to self-isolate.

The advice on this matter is unclear for now.

However, the UFUQ are in discussions with the Office of Industrial Relations and QFES, and other public sector unions, to obtain the relevant information for you.

What we are hearing is that the State Government is working on updating the current Directive relating to pandemic to address COVID-19 specific issues, including leave arrangements, and that it will be released in the very near future. We are monitoring this situation carefully.

While the Directive does not technically apply to UFUQ members (because you are employed under the Fire and Emergency Services Act 1990), it is the intention of the State Government to ensure that workers are supported during this time and that no worker is disadvantaged.

With that in mind, it is the clear expectation of the UFUQ that QFES will apply any relevant provisions to Fire and Rescue, and we will be doing all we can to ensure that QFES make that commitment.

I will ensure members are kept up to date regarding this matter as more information comes to hand.

Labour Day events cancelled

On Friday, prior to the Federal Government’s advice regarding mass gatherings, the Queensland Council of Unions made the decision to cancel all Labour Day events for 2020.

This decision was made in the interest of the health and safety of all union members, and our families and communities, and it was supported by your union.
