Update on leave arrangements relating to COVID-19

Many of you may have already seen the Commissioner’s advice on Monday afternoon relating to COVID-19 leave arrangements (sent via internal QFES email). However, I would like to iterate the advice to ensure all members are aware of their entitlements (as it currently stands) –

Leave and employment advice

If you are:
• required to self-isolate in accordance with health advice and are not sick, you may access flexible work arrangements or special leave
• absent due to illness, you may access sick leave in accordance with the relevant human resources policy in your agency
• required to provide care or support for a dependent based on health advice, you may access carer’s leave in accordance with HR policies.

Further to the above, and my advice on Monday regarding the Directive relating to pandemic, I can now advise that late Monday afternoon the Office of Industrial Relations published Directive 01/20 – Employment Arrangements in the Event of a Health Pandemic which can be found here.

You will recall my previous advice regarding the Directive not technically applying to UFUQ members (because you are employed under the Fire and Emergency Services Act 1990).

The UFUQ have requested that QFES administratively apply the relevant provisions to Fire and Rescue. We are currently advised they intend to do so.

I expect to have some news on this matter very soon and I will ensure members are kept up to date as soon as possible.
