SEPTEMBER 11 – COMMEMORATIONS

On September 11 2001, after coordinated terrorist attacks on United States soil, the twin towers of the World Trade Center in Lower Manhattan collapsed. As a result, more than 2500 people were killed and many thousands more were injured, including 343 fallen comrades from the New York City Fire Department who put themselves in harm’s way to protect the lives of those victims.

Today marks 23 years since that day, and people across the world will pause to commemorate the victims of this tragic event.

Importantly, we also acknowledge that many firefighters later fell ill, and many have died (and continue to die) of diseases they contracted from exposure on September 11. Much research has come from considering these diseases and some of that research has directly contributed to the presumptive disease laws you have the benefit of here in Queensland.

I ask that you take the opportunity today to remember the fallen firefighters.

We should not let the memories of any fallen comrades fade. They made the ultimate sacrifice and we should remember them.

NATIONAL FIREFIGHTERS’ REMEMBRANCE DAY

On Thursday 10th October 2024 firefighters, family and friends will pay tribute to firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

These services commemorate Queensland firefighters who have lost their lives whilst on duty, serving the community of Queensland since 1877.

I will provide more information on how the remembrance services are to be held closer to the date.
